The Role of Absorptive Capacity in R&D Cooperation: an Agent-based Model∗

چکیده
This paper extends the model developed in Egbetokun and Savin (2012) by emphasising the dynamic aspects of partnership formation. Networks emerge as a result of bilateral cooperations over time between firms occupying different locations in the knowledge space. Cognitive distance between two firms reflecting both understandability and novelty aspects of their knowledge stocks changes as a function of the intensity of cooperation and innovation. We examine the role of absorptive capacity (which is itself influenced by cognitive distance and investment allocation between inventive and absorptive R&D) in the emergence and evolution of resulting networks. In doing so, we provide an agent-based model where network-based structural and strategic motives are ignored, and what matters is the decision of a firm on an optimal cognitive distance to a potential partner and its investment allocation under different extents of voluntary and involuntary spillovers. Considering results we focus on whether our model can replicate empirical results on network structure, contingent effects of network position on firms’ performance and firms cooperation strategy.

Organizational Learning and Knowledge Spillover in Innovation Networks: Agent-Based Approach (Extending SKIN Framework)
In knowledge-based economy, knowledge has a public good and non-rivalry nature. Firms build their own knowledge stock not only by means of internal R&D and collaboration with partners, but also by means of previously spilled over knowledge of other firms and public research laboratories (such as universities). Firms based on their absorptive capacity, and level of intra-industry and extra-indus...

متن کاملAbsorptive Capacity and Innovation: Exploring Interdependencies by Simulation
Since Cohen and Levinthal (1989) emphasized the role of absorptive capacity in assimilating and applying new knowledge, a lot of research on the determinants of this capacity has been done. Among others, it was confirmed that proximity among cooperation partners (in terms of organizational and cognitive distance) has an inverted ‘U’–shaped relation with the value of learning the partners obtain...

متن کاملAbsorptive Capacity and Innovation: When Is It Better to Cooperate?∗
Cooperation can benefit and hurt firms at the same time. An important question then is: when is it better to cooperate. And how can an appropriate partner be selected? In this paper we present a model of inter-firm cooperation driven by cognitive distance, appropriability conditions and external knowledge. Absorptive capacity of firms develops as an outcome of the interaction between absorptive...
